I discovered Phil’s Red’s Kingdom blog through Kerfe Roig (Thank you, Kerfe!) – Phil hosts a group art prompt he calls The Kick-About which is fabulous for discovering new artists to love. I was inspired by the Kick-About #4 prompt, which was a short clip from Jean Cocteau’s “Orpheus”
The first thing I thought of was “mirror neurons” – which are special neurons found (so far) only in primates and birds that activate either when the animal does the behavior or they see another animal doing the same behavior (mirroring them). No one knows why we have them or truly what function they serve, although there is much speculation. It was fun to get out some of the science images I’ve saved over the years for this collage.
I did go back and do another interpretation of the theme in collage – inspired they the line “and in it, I see an unhappy man.”

Thanks, Phil for hosting! Looking forward to the next one!
I love that you have joined in! The gridded and rearranged face is an especially appealing idea to me. (K)

Thank you, Kerfe! Your work with grids really inspired me. When I was archiving old posts I found the picture I took years ago of the Hollywood reservoir that you turned into an amazing grid and was reminded of their power.

Oh yes, I love that grid. Framed, but in storage now. Someday, when I find a permanent home, it will go back on the wall. Of course all the art is in the very back of the storage room…

I love this image, Marcy. Btw, I still have that postcard you sent me years ago. I really enjoy your work.

This image is deceptively simple. I found myself really drawn into it, looking to connect the parts in different ways and how that changes the story it tells.

Thank you, Claudia! I was hoping to invoke the mystery of these neurons along with the mystery of the mirror from the video clip. 🙂

I found myself studying your image and making connections, and then noticing that I was hopping around it in different ways with my eyes. Lots of levels of interactions here not to mention, it is pleasing how it is laid out, just as something to look at. I think this is really hard to do.
