I recently rescued a nearly full package of matte photo paper from the recycling bin at work – I guess folks don’t need to print photos anymore! I quickly discovered that I love drawing on the unique surface: it grabs graphite well and then is easy to blend. I don’t normally illustrate quotes, as there seems to be an entire industry devoted to that already, but I couldn’t resist with this Bukowski quote. Drawing (pencil on photo paper) and composition by me. Enjoy!

The combination of your illustration with this line is exquisitely haunting! If I could give you more than 1 Like, I would.

Thank you! I’d saved the quote in my “inspiration” folder not long ago and I kept coming back to it, and then finally something just clicked and I started drawing!

I agree–so whimsical, powerful, and skilled. You have an amazing ability to capture the unstated heart of the words.

Wow! Very disturbing—and so, so true. Bukowski didn’t hold any punches, did he? And I’m glad to see that you didn’t, either, with your drawing. It’s awesome! Are you interested in selling this?

Thank you so much, Jilanne! No, Bukowski didn’t hold back – I was double checking the provenance of the quote and ran across a BBC article of more of his no-holds-barred wisdom:

Let’s talk about the drawing – I’m always interested in finding my art a loving home! – send me an email through the Contact tab! 🙂

Oh my!!! Took me a few seconds to realize what I was looking at….and I think that’s a good thing….pondering over what we see!
Great illustration for this quote — and double whammy with the recycling hit!

Thank you so much! I really enjoy all things “found” – including my art supplies. I think recycled material takes some of the pressure off and allows you to create with abandon and without the worry about the cost of the paper or whatnot!

Great image for a great quote! And what a fantastic use for unwanted photo paper. (I passed that gem on to my daughter, who does a lot of artwork.)
